Sushi & Sashimi moriawase
To celebrate the BF’s new employment we treated 3 of our friends to sushi at Kiraku in the Hague. Forget about the all you can eat! Kiraku is very good, has a Japanese chef and the starters are absolutely fabulous.

Birthday High Tea at Lof der Zoetheid Rotterdam

by peejeej on August 4th, 2010

Sunday 25th of July we had a full blown NOM Fest. High Tea at Lof der Zoetheid. We had lots and lots of savory and mostly sweet yummy goodness. It was our first time eating there and it will certainly wont be our last. I definitely want to try the meatballs in tomato sauce that were tempting me while we were waiting for our own table.

LdZ has a nice decor which is a mixture of vintage and clean crisp design. There is one big modern table at the center of a bunch of old salvaged school tables and stools. An old record player plays some jazzy tunes. Acousticly it isn’t very ideal, sounds resonate all over the place.

The suspects:

The loot:

Rest of the pictures behind the cut cuz I have loads of them. Excuse any photography fails, my mind was elsewhere… (hmmm.. food)

Pre-Birthday Lunch

by peejeej on July 26th, 2010

My birthday was on the 25 of July. Turned 31 (omg).. I’ve been craving lobster, since it has been about a year since I last had any. We went to Grand Palace in Rotterdam.

We chose to types of dim sum:
Char Siu Cheong Fun
Char Siu Cheong Fun, Chinese bbq pork wrapped in rice noodle sheets with soy sauce.

Turnip cake
Turnip cake, steamed rice flour and Asian radish with dried shrimp and pork cut into slices and panfried. One of my all time favourites, especially when the outside has turned crispy.

As our mains we had half a Peking duck and lobster together with some steamed rice. I really wanted some pork belly, but they had run out. :(

Peking duck with pancaked
Thinly cut pieces of Peking duck with crispy crunchy skin.

Peking duck with pancaked
Pancakes and toppings (cucumber, spring onion, pickled cabbage and hoi sin sauce) for the peking duck.

Peking duck with pancaked
Om nom nom! It’s making my mouth water.

And my all time favourite which I just don’t have often enough.
Lobster with ginger and green onions
Lobster with ginger, garlic and spring onions.. I ate my first lobster as a kid with Chinese New Years. It’s been a long time since I celebrated it with my family and only recently discovered the dish at a local restaurant. Sadly though it was a bit tough, because it was slightly overcooked. I still loved it though and the sauce on it’s own it just yummy.

Dinner @ friends’ house

by peejeej on March 20th, 2010

Sui long bao Had dinner at a friends’ house. We went shopping at an asian supermarket and got some yummies. Above steamed Sui long bao dim sum. One had a bit of a tragic accident with another dim sum and damaged his skin. Ate these with a soy and spring onion dip.

Duck with pancakes Duck with pancakes We also got deboned roasted duck with pancakes which we ate together with strips of cucumber, spring onion and plum or hoisin sauce. NOMNOMNOM!!

Slacking

by peejeej on January 28th, 2010

Yes, my first post of 2010. Been slacking a bit on the food front. Had a fun new years dinner/party with friends in the Hague. And being the great food blogger that I am, I didn’t make pics. D’OH! We have roasted duck with pancakes, hoi sin sauce, cucumber and spring onion, steamed rice, chukawakame salad, stir fried kai lan with garlic/soy/oyster sauce, Chinese roasted pork, sate and cheese cake. NOMNOMNOM!

So let’s not let this post go without a photo. Our regular Chinese restaurant reopened and it appears they have a couple of new dishes.

Chinese pancake
This one is a new favorite already. Chinese pancake with spring onion and chinese sausage. I’m not a huge fan of the sausage (err.. yeah), but there wasn’t a lot in there (..) so it was great. Slightly crispy and oniony, yum. Will try to make these myself some day, but right now I can’t be bothered.

Will have some new posts coming soon. Including a new made up awesome sesame beef dish.

Chinese Favorites

Chinese Favorites A post about some of my favorite Chinese dishes. Excuse the bad quality phone pics, but I just had to share these. Also not sure about the “correct spelling” of these dishes. I might be of Chinese descent, but I don’t speak it.

Kiraku the Hague

by peejeej on November 24th, 2009

Kiraku Last saturday, BF and I had dinner with a friend(Peter) at Kiraku in the Hague. We wanted to try a different restaurant this time. And a good thing we did.

My all time favorite Japanese restaurant was Genki Tei in the Hague. I’m not completely sure which one is the winner but this one is just awesome. Oh and they have two Japanese chefs, most Japanese restaurants here have Chinese chefs.

On to the photo’s! Forgive me, some are blurry and when there is food you have to be quick with taking pics :p.

Kimchi House

by peejeej on November 8th, 2009

Kimchi House Rotterdam
We had 2 birthdays to celebrate, so with a group of friends we had dinner at Kimchi House in Rotterdam. It’s an all you can eat Korean restaurant.

In the left photo: Korean carpacchio (little strips of marinated raw beef) and several spicy pickles (cucumber, radish, spinach, cabbage).
In the right photo: potato cakes, spring rolls, squid and on the table bbq there was marinated pangasius with vegetables.

We had several bbq and skewer dishes. Unfortutanely all the skewers had the same teriyaki like sauce which masked a lot of the meat’s flavors. The best were the beef skewers, the beef was perfectly cooked (rare) so tender and flavorful. Best bbq dish was the entrecot beef with had some nice spices and marinade.

Per round you could order as many dishes as you want, but they advised not to order too many bbq dishes at once. You cook the meat or fish in the table bbq and eat this with lettuce leaves. They refresh the bbq top regularly so you don’t cook on a heavily charred grill. There is also a built in vacume system so you don’t go home smelling like a smoked eel.

It was nice to have something other than sushi, but I wouldn’t say that this was one of my favorite restaurants. It’s a shame that the skewers mostly tasted like teriyaki. The bbq squid and panga also weren’t a big hit. This place is a meatlovers paradise however. Still unsure wether there will be a repeat visit.

Picknick take 2

by peejeej on October 18th, 2009

Picknick Rotterdam A week ago BF and I had lunch at Picknick Rotterdam.

Unfortunately service was absolutely horrible and we probably wont be back. One of the waitresses had an accident which resulted in my wool jacket and bag (Freitag thank god) to be covered in coffee creamer. Luckily no stains, but it reeked horribly. Accidents can happen and I don’t blame her at all. I thought it was very unfriendly that no other staff members offered to help her clean up the mess. We had to wait a very long time for our drinks and order. Sometimes staff take it a bit too far checking wether guests want more drinks or food, but they took it to the absolute opposite. It’s such a shame though, because their food is nice.

Anyways on to the food.
